Join us on this Assynt photography workshop in the North West Scottish Highlands, when the Autumnal colour will be at its best! Tony Higginson who will be leading this tour knows the area very well, and has visited Assynt many times over the past few years. This stunning landscape is dominated by the peaks of Suilven, Cul Mor, and Stac Pollaidh, and you will be visiting several different locations which all offer different views of these majestic mountains. The relatively easy walk up Stac Pollaidh delivers views right across Assynt and is a sight you will not want to miss.

An amazingly diverse landscape
There is a lot more to this area than just the mountains though. The coastline has some of the best and quietest beaches in the UK. With turquoise seas and white coral sand shores, there are photographic opportunities everywhere. Achnahaird with its stunning clifftop vistas, Achmelvich which is a great place to photograph waves, and Clachtoll with its iconic wedge-shaped rock will form the main beaches we will be exploring. Staying in the heart of the area just outside of Lochinver, we are ideally placed to have access to all the best locations with the minimum travelling possible.
The shoreline of Loch Assynt is quite simply stunning. Scattered with islands which are home to Scots pines, they are a dream location for any serious landscape photographer. You will also be visiting two of the best waterfalls in Scotland. Both the wailing widow falls, and Clashnessie falls offer great opportunities for the classic wide landscapes, and also more intimate abstract images.
Take your work to the next level.
No matter what your ability, Tony will be there to assist you on the technical side of landscape photography, but also on the more advanced aspects such as composition and using light in your images. With such a diverse landscape, you will have lots of time to practise many different techniques ranging from long exposure, using filters, detail and abstract photography and lots more.
The group is only small with Tony leading just three clients for the week. This will allow you all the time you need to discuss and work on your photography on a one to one basis out in the field, and of course to work on your post-production in the evening. You are encouraged to bring a laptop so that your learning can be interactive whether you use Lightroom or Photoshop, Tony is an expert and can help you to produce professional final images which will be ready to print.
Staying in a luxury cottage
This tour begins on Saturday the 28th of September at 17.00 when we will meet at the cottage before heading out to get to know one another over an evening meal. Sunday to Thursday will be five days of landscape photography covering the wide range of locations in the area, revisiting some of the places more than once with different light and at different times of the day.
At the end of September, the days are still quite long with 12 hours of sunlight a day, which is one of the reasons we will be staying in a luxury cottage. This gives us complete flexibility to make the most of the best times of day for shooting. We will have some early rises to capture the sunrise, and we will also stay out late to photograph the sunset, and I will make these decisions based on the weather and tides.
We will be staying at the wonderful Lochside house just on the outskirts of Lochinver. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, and we will be dining in Pete’s restaurant some evenings, and eating in the cottage on the other nights. This allows us to stay out shooting the sunset, and return to relax and enjoy a home cooked meal in the comfort of a luxury cottage.
